GRAHAME GRANT

Age – 53

Position – Disability Support Worker

Time in role – 2 weeks as a volunteer and 1 week as an employee.

What do you like most about your role and CDS? Job satisfaction and the change. Every day is different and no two days are the same. I also get a new qualification as I am studying for my Certificate 4 in Disability Support Work.

Why are you working in this industry? Initially I noticed how happy Jonty was in the role after 8 years as he is a personal friend and I thought I would give it a shot. Since then I haven’t looked back. Seeing the clients happy gives me a real buzz. Whether it’s Blake coming out of his shell and winning ten pin bowling or Amanda (Moo) in a good mood.

If you weren’t in this industry what would you be doing? I was from the hospitality industry but I would be building I think.

What is the greatest myth in this industry? Just because people can’t talk doesn’t mean they can’t communicate. I also think another myth is that disabled people aren’t scary. We need to educate the public more in this regard.

If you were CEO for a day what would you change first? I’d make the place bigger – hopefully all our efforts will make that a reality.
